Frozen Inside

Inside my work that is. It might actually be warmer outside right now. There is no heat to counteract the air conditioning that I think is stuck on. I wouldn't have a problem with it, only I didn't dress warm enough for this today. Spring is finally here, which means misery for my sinuses. I don't even know what it is I'm allergic to. It's just spring. I am allergic to spring.

Anyway, I didn't make a post to complain about temperature and nasal congestion, though it certainly gave me the opportunity. I have been working away all weekend whenever I have time, and have completed a lot of Half Life 2 videos. I posted three videos over the weekend (one was supposed to be posted last night, but the video didn't publish for some reason and I JUST noticed) and I expect to post three parts of Ravenholm in the next couple days. The gaming laptop I am using to record it (quite literally the only machine that I can use that CAN record it due to lag) is breaking video in all sorts of interesting ways. So far, I have been able to handle it.

What to expect this week:
-HL2: Ravenholm chapter
-The beginning of Penumbra: Black Plague
-A couple Bioshock Infinite videos (the LP is on hold otherwise)
-Just Cause 2 Multiplayer videos (as requested by my brother)

IMPORTANT: We are currently not recording Bioshock Infinite as Shauna has encountered a problem with her HDMI cable connecting her laptop to the TV. While we could play this on her laptop screen, it is a lot more difficult for two people to see and comment on it. In case someone out there can help us (or more specifically her as it is her machine), this is what's going on:
-HDMI previously connected to the television fine
-When it is connected now, the TV will not recognize the laptop, or the laptop's screen will flash on and off
-The laptop will connect on start-up (ie the Windows start-up logo and screen) but fails to work when it reaches the desktop
-She has not installed any new software aside from games (particularly Deus Ex)
-We have tested the resolution and that is not the issue
-I am unsure of whether she has tested the refresh rate
-The cable is not faulty as we tested this with other devices
-The TV is not faulty for the same reason

If anyone has a solution or has encountered this and fixed it, please leave a comment on this blog, or message me on YouTube/Google+. She would really like some answers.

Half Life 1...

Turns out quite a few people were interested in seeing the Half Life 1 LP continued/completed. Oops. I got incredibly lazy with that LP's production. It's not because I do not enjoy the game (in fact it's one of my favourites of all time), but I had some issues with recording that required more of my time. Other LPs were much easier and faster to produce, so I naturally took that route since I've been busy since December. I explain what happened a little on the Surface Tensions videos (of which I'm not too proud of as I get very lost, have very low health and ammo, and the chapter ended up being 2 hours and 30 minutes long). The chapter actually would have been longer had I not forgotten to press the record button when I exited out of the menu. So I had to play that section a second time, and therefore knew exactly what was coming for a short period of time.

I recorded more yesterday. Be prepared for an hour long session of video in your future consisting of swears, screaming and breaking triggers (I'm pretty sure someone actually told me about the glitch in question, but I was surprised to encounter it as I had totally forgotten if they had). I actually disturbed some people in my household as voices travel very well through vents. They were mildly concerned that I was screaming and cussing for about an hour, seemingly at nothing, alone, in my bedroom.

Time to Slay the Dragon

Which is Penumbra. Going through this footage will take me many hours, especially since I am making occasional comments and ensuring the audio is in its proper place (otherwise there will be a lot of voice commentary that makes even less sense than usual).

Something catastrophic happened to the audio in the middle of Penumbra: Black Plague, which is unfortunate as it was the best out of the three. As I'm watching though, I'm realizing this wasn't one of my favourite LPs. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't overly good either. We did have some entertaining commentary though. Best LP Shauna and I have done so far appears to be Outlast, and I think it's partially because it was a GOOD horror game. Which was bad for me incidentally as it left me a little on edge before, during and after we played.

Anyhow, two segments complete...estimated 18 to 20 left. Damn. Yeah, there's over 16 hours of footage to watch.

Audio Issues

For the past couple of weeks I experienced a drop in mic audio quality that I did not pick up until recently (Mesk ended up pointing them out to me) and I've been working to fix it. We ran a couple tests and discovered Fraps was the culprit from what we could figure out. I adjusted some settings, which ended with me moving to a lower frequency. Which was weird, but it works now so I can't complain. Point overall for this is, the audio quality in the last 6 or so segments of Alice, in addition to some Left 4 Dead 2 content is lower than normal. For those who notice these levels of detail, I apologize. If you didn't notice, well now you'll be listening extra careful for it.

PS - I use a Blue Microphone - The Snowflake, in case anyone runs into the same issues

Lots to Upload

For once. I guess that's what happens when you only have a couple of shifts a week. The frequency of uploads may change when I get a full time job, but for now I just have to worry about flooding people's feeds.

Hit 200 subscribers yesterday, which is a pretty awesome feeling. I make and post videos as a hobby, but I put a lot of effort into it, and the fact that people are actually interested in watching, as small as it is, is a real honour and makes every minute spent playing, recording, editing, encoding and uploading worth it. I've never been interested in making money off of my channel or attracting a huge amount of subscribers, so having a small viewer group is all I could really ask for. As for joining groups or partnerships, I will only do so if it is a group of people I know, have worked with them in the past, and share a lot of the same interests. Anyhow, I want to thank everyone who watches my videos!

On that note, I should be done uploading Outlast by Monday or Tuesday depending on my connection. I have everything encoded and ready to upload, and I've had Billy Joel's "Piano Man" stuck in my head on loop for the last three days because of this LP, but it's done. I was much more freaked out during this game than I was playing Amnesia. As for A Machine for Pigs, I'm not sure what the plan is for that LP. Shauna and I looked at it the day it came out, and there's this strange blue filter on it that wasn't present on any of the trailers or gameplay previews. I wasn't too concerned about it, though I must admit it doesn't look that great. Regardless, I believe we plan on making an LP of that in the future.

Diablo 1 and Half Life 1 will continue to alternate in uploads until they are finished. I expect Diablo 1 to be fully uploaded by the end of next week (unless I take a day or two off to give my network a break) and Half Life 1 will be finished and completely uploaded probably the week after. I still haven't finished Half Life 1, but I will say that there are some incredibly silly moments ahead concerning some soldiers and the ninja assassin fellows.

As for future LPs, I have had requests to play through Diablo 2 and Black Mesa. I will probably leave Black Mesa to just before the New Year as I want a bit of a break after Half Life 1. I don't know how similar the two are, but it would be weird playing essentially the same game back to back. What would be interesting would be to compare the two. As for Diablo 2, I have my reservations about it. I may do this LP as with 1 to 2 other people who have expressed interest in playing. My first worry is that the game will not record well as I've had problems with that in the past. Fraps and the quality of my computer, however, have been improved in the last 5 years. My second issue is that I have had...bad experiences with the game in the past, partially of my doing and I am not eager to repeat that experience. My greatest fear is that there will be conflict of interest and the LP will fall apart, but these people seem like decent fellows, and I'm much more mature than I was 5 years ago.

I also plan on maybe LPing Overlord and Overlord 2, working my way down the list of my favourite games to play. Another few options would be games I have never played before: Miasmata, the Thief series, Bastion, Torchlight, Torchlight 2 and Deus Ex. If there are any other suggestions of games you would like to see me LP, leave a comment here or on my channel and I'll do my best to fulfill those requests. There are very few games I will refuse to record/LP.

11%

Is how much my free space my hard drives had IN TOTAL last night. Now, after the deletion of some raw video files that had been worked with already...I have a significant amount more. I am currently on my reading week which means I will probably be working late into the night and wake up late in the day (with the exception of some mornings). My plan is to get a significant amount of Broken World recording and videos uploaded, work on the third and final Left 4 Dead 2 Clip show, encode the last few full episodes of L4D2, organize all the random little clips I have on my hard drives and delete the ones I'm not going to use anymore, begin work on the larger video project I have going and prepare for recording Dungeon Siege 3, because that day is fast approaching.

This week I also hope to update this blog a little bit with screen shots from Dungeon Siege 2, because I haven't done that in a long while. Skyrim DLC is also out, which I purchased yesterday, so you can be sure that a lot of hours will be going into that. I also need to update my Dungeons and Dragons logs, do a little mid-winter cleaning, get some writing done...oh yeah and school work. I'm sure I have a little of that too.

In addition, I have posted it a few times on the YouTube page, but I've been starting to play a bit of Dungeon Siege multiplayer with some interested parties. If anyone is interested in trying it or joining, please send a message my YouTube account. That is all.

Break

So, two weeks since my last video post. I am having a great deal of difficulty with recording as of late. I explain it a bit on the WMRR blog, but I will restate it here.

1) My laptop is not cooperating. The CD drive is not working again. I fixed it once, but I'm not sure if I can do it again. At this point I have two options: no CDpatch/iso or move the entire operation to my fully functioning computer. Downside to the former is that the laptop is unpredictable and random components tend to break. Downside to the latter is the sound and settings are completely different on the other machine.

2) I have no time. I am balancing 2 jobs and editing, writing, family commitments and having a decent social life with my hobbies including playing video games and recording. I need a pocket of time during the week were I can record in silence, uninterrupted and at a time where I'm not waking up my entire household by swearing at armour regenerating trees.

3) I'm having a tough time getting motivated to record and encode. I love making videos. I love playing video games. Naturally, I love recording video games that I play. The problem is I also love a lot of other activities and I just don't have the time for it. I feel terrible if I haven't produced a video in weeks, but that's mostly because I know that some people are waiting to watch the next instalment. I can't take my time when life gets busy or when I feel like doing something else for a bit. I haven't written much in months. I haven't read a book in god knows how long. I miss activities like that.

Conclusions? I may delay the production of Broken World and DS3. I know I was excited about these, but I need a little time to just...get everything sorted out on my end. I will finish Dungeon Siege 2 as soon as I can. Maybe in producing the last Act (and the last bits of Act II) will spark my addiction to making more videos, but the truth is I'm just tired at the moment. These problems coupled by the few people who have given rather irritating feedback on my videos (mostly the Carmen San Diego one) indicating nothing beyond how much I "suck," have really killed my desire to continue for the time being. I have yet to decide on this, but I know that I need to give something up for awhile. So I will think about it and come up with an answer soon.
